The term ‘chance occurrence’ expresses one facet of the truth, but as an explanation for the existence of the universe and its processes, it is patently absurd. According to Professor Edwin Conklin, a biologist at Princeton University, “The probability of life originating from accident is comparable to the probability of the Unabridged Dictionary resulting from an explosion in a printing shop.’16 It is said that an explanation for the existence and working of the universe with reference to ‘chance’ is not just a haphazard guess but, in the words of Sir James Jeans, is based on ‘purely mathematical laws of chance’ (The Mysterious Universe, p. 3). An author writes: ‘Now chance, or probability as it is termed, is a highly developed mathematical theory which is applied to that vast range of objects of knowledge that are beyond absolute certainty.
