INHERITANCE OF PROPERTY that this was an act performed by a woman. Perhaps there could be no better demonstration of a woman’s greatness than God’s command to all men to follow in her footsteps. We can see that the principle implied by the expression ‘ladies first’ in modern times had already been established in Islam at the very outset. INHERITANCE OF PROPERTY Islam recognises equal status of man and woman in the eyes of God. Therefore, women have their legal personality under Muslim law. They are given the right to own property, dispose of it, inherit from their relatives, and keep to themselves their earnings, which they can spend in any way they wish. Women play many societal roles: daughters, sisters, mothers, and wives to men. In their different capacities, they are allowed a share in the properties of their relatives in proportions fixed by the Quran and explained in the traditions or legal literature.
