Life of the Prophet

Before his death he said the last prayer in the Masjid-e­-Nabawi and made Abu Bakr the Imam of this prayer. The importance attached to the Imam in the congregational prayer was a clear indication that Abu Bakr was going to succeed as the Caliph or the leader of the believers after the Prophet. The Prophet died in the room attached to the Masjid-e-Nabawi. He was buried in the same place and his grave exists there to this day. Later when Abu Bakr and Umar died, they were also buried to the right and left side of the Prophet.
