Indeed, God has revealed to me that you must adopt humility, so that no one behaves arrogantly towards another, and no one takes pride over another. Prophet Muhammad ﷺ (Sunan Abi Dawud, Hadith No. 4895) This means a believer does not merely look at things; he thinks about them. Observation followed by reflection leads to discovery. An animal requires physical food, but man requires both physical and intellectual nourishment. If a person satisfies only his bodily needs while neglecting his intellectual needs, his human potential remains undeveloped. Make it a habit, therefore, to discover something every day. Read attentively, observe carefully, listen patiently and think deeply. Even an unpleasant experience can teach you something that a pleasant experience cannot. Daily discovery keeps the mind alive. It develops creativity and enlarges one’s understanding. And it is the creative mind—the mind that continuously discovers new meaning in old things—that becomes capable of achieving greater things in life.
