A problem has limits; perseverance need have none. The Quran says, “Indeed, God is with the patient.” (2: 153) Patience does not mean simply waiting. It means remaining steadfast, continuing one’s efforts and refusing to surrender to discouragement. Great achievements seldom appear suddenly. They are generally the accumulated result of small efforts made consistently. A book is written page by page, knowledge acquired lesson by lesson, and a great institution built step by step. When faced with a mountain of difficulty, therefore, do not waste your energy calculating its enormous size. Begin removing whatever portion lies within your reach. You do not have to remove the whole mountain today. Your responsibility is simpler: keep digging. If your effort continues, the obstacle cannot remain unchanged. Every sincere attempt makes the mountain smaller. Perseverance means believing that continuous effort will ultimately prevail. Death may spare man from facing human judges, but it will immediately set him before his Maker, the greatest Divine Judge, which will be a much more terrifying experience.
