Bhopal, April 20 (UNI): The Muslim Women (Divorce) Bill intro- duced in the Lok Sabha does not contravene the Shariat says a well- known Islamic theologian. Maulana Waheeduddin Khan head of New Delhi based Islamic centre told newsmen here today that Islam held women in high esteem and provisions in the Shariat clearly define the status of Muslim women. The protection provided to Muslim women would be further strengthened by the Bill when it becomes law, he added. Referring to the Shahbano case, the Maulana said it was more a social than a legal problem. He said that the maintenance provided by the Supreme Court to Shahbano would not be sufficient. If the issue had been decided through arbitration, Shahbano would have had a better deal, he said. The Maulana said former Chief Justice Chandrachud had misquoted from the Hadees in the Supreme Court decision. 'The reference to women as the rib of man has been misquoted by the learned judge.' "The comparison has been done to point out to Muslims that a woman was like a rib which would break if straightened out. Thus a woman should be respected and loved as you love your body.", the Maulana explained claiming that it was not a reference derogatory to the fair sex. The Maulana said it was wrong to say that the Shariat or the Muslim personal law was not codified. The Times of India, 21 April 1986
