Road, Raya Pettah, Madras 600014. RESTRAINT PREVENTED LARGE SCALE VIOLENCE Two organisations -- Citizens for a Secular Society and Penn -- a Centre for Women’s Studies -- have expressed deep concern over the Vinayaka Chathurthi procession on Sunday. In a statement they said “the processions were far from religious in nature. What we found instead was an aggressive and communal campaign directed against members of the minority community. The processionists were boister- ous young men, a number of them carrying sticks, shouting slogans like ‘This is a Hindu nation and only Hindus can live here.’ ‘We will destroy the mosque and build a Ram temple.’ ‘Fearless Hindus, come forward as a battalion.’ This show of communal viciousness made a mockery of a supposedly religious occasion. Members of the minority community, on the whole showed great re- straint. It was this, combined with effective police presence that, in our opinion, prevented large scale violence. The attention of the public is drawn to this transforming of a religious event by blatantly communal and political organisations. The Hindu (Madras), September 26, 1991.
