Backache is a common health problem With reference to the Backache is a common health problem 'Talking back' (TOI, June 13) by Jug Suraiya, backache is indeed one of the most common complaint that people suffer from at some stage in their lives. The most common causes behind the problem are poor posture, improper lifting or bending. A sedentary lifestyle with little or no exercise and overexertion of the body can be harmful too. One explanation for the vulnerability of the lower back is that it is one of the weakest parts in the human body, having evolved from walking on fours to walking upright. This unique evolutionary adaptation is a relatively recent change. As a result, the stresses acting upon the vertebral column are unique in many respects and result in a variety of problems that are peculiar to the human species. A proper posture can go a long way towards providing relief from backaches. (Subhash Kaura, The Times of India, New Delhi, June 15, 2009)
